A Prelude to Easter at Boscombe
Following close on the heels of their visit to Lower Earley, the Boscombe Band (Bandmaster Dr. Howard J. Evans) provided a Sunday evening concert at Boscombe Corps. The chosen theme for the concert, held on 25 March 2012, was “A Prelude to Easter”. The program mixed band items, songs and Scripture, with the thread of the Passion Chorale running through the evening.
The concert opened with To a God Like This (John Larsson, arr. Ian Robinson), followed by the congregation singing the first verse of the Passion Chorale (arr. Howard J. Evans) and a prayer.
The first section of the program, “Triumphal Entry”, was introduced with the reading of Mark 11:4–10. The band played Ride On in Majesty (arr. Howard J. Evans) and The Name (Martin Cordner) before the section ended with the congregation singing the second verse of the Passion Chorale.
The Scripture for “Signs of the End of the Age”, the second section, was Luke 21:26–28. The band presented Dies Irae from Verdi’s Requiem (arr. William Gordon) and the offering was taken. The congregation again ended the section, with the third verse of the chorale.
The next section was “Good Friday”, with the band playing Dean Jones’ Written in Red after the reading of Luke 23:44–49. This led directly into the fourth section, “Incomparable Power”, with the band offering He Can Break Every Fetter (Kenneth Downie) and the congregation responding with the fourth verse of the chorale. The Scripture for this section was Ephesians 1:18–21.
“Resurrection Meaning”, framed by 1 Corinthians 15:50–58, was the fifth and final section. The band’s contribution to this section was one of the gems of Salvation Army brass band literature, Leslie Condon’s masterpiece The Call of the Righteous. As before, the congregation ended the section (and the concert) in song, this time the contemporary Christian song In Christ Alone.
Following the benediction, the band sent the congregation home with the affirmative I’ll Walk with God (Nicholas Brodszky, arr. Goff Richards).
