Annual Appeal Festival 2010

On Saturday, 18 September 2010, the Solent Area Fellowship Band (Bandmaster Chris Kennett) joined with Southsea Citadel Songsters (Songster Leader Margaret Bishop) for the Annual Appeal Festival 2010.

The concert, held at Southsea Citadel Salvation Army Corps, commenced with the Fellowship Band playing the march Spirit of Joy (Herbert Rive). Corps Sergeant-Major John Burton welcomed everyone to the event before inviting the congregation to join with the Fellowship Band in the song “Who Is On the Lord’s Side?” After Major Derek Smith offered prayer, the Fellowship Band presented the air varié The Old Wells (Eric Ball).

The Songsters then performed two items, Sing for Joy (Richard Phillips) and A Child Can Serve Thee (Ivy Mawby/Michael Kenyon).

A solo item followed, featuring the Fellowship Band’s principal tenor horn, Callam Carter, who played Derek Jordan’s arrangement of the Rondo from Mozart’s fourth horn concerto.

Bandmaster Kennett continued the program, conducting the Fellowship Band in Can You Feel the Love Tonight? (Tim Rice/Elton John, arr. Frank Bernaerts) and the song arrangement Whiter than the Snow (William Himes).

Major Mary Wolfe, Southsea Citadel corps officer, gave a presentation outlining the work of the Salvation Army funded through the Annual Appeal, after which a collection was taken.

The music continued as the Songsters sang Lift Up the Cross (Dennis and Nan Allen) and He Sought Me (Sidney Cox/Damien Wileman). The next two items from the Fellowship Band were the festival arrangement Let There Be Praise (arr. Barrie Gott) and the meditation St. Bees (Lloyd Scott).

After Major Smith read words from Scripture, the Songsters sang their final two items of the evening, With Wings As Eagles (P. Williams/B. Harlan) and God and God Alone (Phil McHugh/Tom Fettke). The Fellowship Band then played two contrasting items to complete their contributions, Deep River (arr. William Broughton) and The Blessing (William Himes).

In conclusion, Major Wolfe expressed her appreciation for the evening’s activities and offered a final prayer.
