Fellowship and Youth Bands Join for Charity Concert

On Friday, 25 June 2010, the Solent Area Fellowship Band (Bandmaster Chris Kennett) joined with their guests, the Southampton Youth Brass Band (Director John Hanchett), to present a Charity Concert in aid of the Kyamutwoi Salvation Army Corps in Kenya. The concert was held in the hall at Portsmouth Citadel.

The concert commenced with the Fellowship Band playing William Gordon’s festival march Salvation’s Song, followed by Major Cedric Hills, Portsmouth Citadel corps officer, welcoming the bands and congregation. After a congregational song, Major Lyn Hills offered prayer.

Musical Director John Hanchett then conducted the Youth Band in two contrasting items, Punchinello (William Rimmer) and Vitae Lux (Frode Alnaes, arr. Aagaard-Nilsen). The Fellowship Band continued the program with Memory (Andrew Lloyd Webber, arr. Goff Richards), after which Major Cedric Hills gave a presentation about the work of the Kyamutwoi Salvation Army Corps.

Bandmaster Kennett led the Fellowship Band in the song setting ’Mid all the Traffic (Leonard Ballantine) before the Youth Band presented My Bonny Boy (Ralph Vaughn-Williams, arr. Dennis Wright) and Toccata in D minor (Johann Sebastian Bach, arr. Ray Farr).

After a short interval, the Fellowship Band got the second half started with Alderney (Dean Goffin). This was followed by a solo item featuring the principal tenor horn of the Fellowship Band, Callam Carter, who played Derek Jordan’s arrangement of the Rondo from Mozart’s fourth Horn Concerto. After this, the Fellowship Band presented the suite Shout Salvation (Robert Redhead).

The concert continued with the Youth Band’s presentation of 12th Street Rag (arr. Alan Fernie). This was followed by pianoforte soloist David Samuels, who played Plaisir d’Amour (Giovanni Martini) and Cavatina (Stanley Miles). The Fellowship Band then presented two contrasting items by American composers, Deep River (arr. William Broughton) and The Blessing (William Himes). Paul Lovatt-Cooper’s composition Darkside of the Moon was the final contribution from the Youth Band.

After Major Lyn Hills thanked everyone for their attendance, she announced that the the event had raised £450 towards the work of the Kyamutwoi Salvation Army Corps. The combined bands played St. Clements (Keith Ketteringham) as a benediction.
