Smith Appointed to Canadian Staff Band
The Canadian Staff Band (Bandmaster John Lam) has welcomed Jeremy Smith into the group on first baritone. Jeremy attends the North Toronto corps, where is a bandsman and songster, plays piano and gives leadership to the corps worship team. He is in his second year of the concurrent teacher education program at the University of Toronto Faculty of Music, studying euphonium with Staff Band alumnus Robert Miller. Smith is also a member of the Ontario Central-East Divisional Youth Band and Youth Chorus and is an aspiring composer of brass band and choral music.
It is interesting to note that Smith’s appointment makes five father-son combinations currently serving in the Canadian Staff Band, as his father is Deputy Bandmaster Major Ken Smith. The other father-son combinations are John and Jeremy Avery, Ken and Joshua Bailey, Ron and Adam Pearson, and Dave and Philip Rayment. The Staff Band has a rich legacy of various family members serving together at one time or another. It is encouraging to see this continue into the present generation and it bodes well for the future of the band.
