Portrait of Christmas

The “House Full” signs were in evidence yet again at the Cadogan Hall in London on 21 December 2009 when Hendon Band (Bandmaster David Rudd) joined with the world-famous King’s Singers for an event entitled Portrait of Christmas. Also performing were percussionist Simone Rebello and Alison Richards, who brought Christmas readings to life for the large audience.

Under the baton of Bandmaster Rudd, the Hendon Band set the scene with an exhilarating rendition of Gaudete and added appropriate musical interludes during the evening.

Simone Rebello brought excitement, skill and dexterity with her playing. The highlight for many was A Little Prayer (Evelyn Glennie), which left the concert hall hushed for a moment before the applause greeted Rebello’s masterful performance.

The King’s Singers contributions were what everyone expected from this renowned vocal group, which had just celebrated its 40th year. They presented folk songs and traditional carols, and provided many humorous moments, during the concert. A highlight was the final verse of Away in a Manger, leaving the crowd spellbound by the group’s artistry, only to be left in fits of laughter by the encore presentation of The Twelve Days of Christmas.

Alison Richards provided poetry that brought home the real reason for Christmas and sent both the audience and performers on their way ready to celebrate the birth of the Christ-child.
