Gravesend Visit by South London

Making its sixth visit to Gravesend, the South London Fellowship Band presented a festival on 20 November 2009 before a near-capacity crowd.

Always popular at Gravesend, the Fellowship Band, under conductor Major George Whittingham, presented a program including old and modern arrangements in the first half. These ranged from The Canadian and Shout Salvation to Over Here, Over There. Solo items from Alan Moyes (cornet) who played Someone Cares and Andy Stewart (flügelhorn) who played You Raise Me Up were well received.

The second half of the evening took the form of the “Last Night of the Proms” and featured favorites such as Pomp and Circumstance and Fantasia on British Sea Songs with Les Swift as vocal soloist. These items included audience participation and the familiar flag waving. The enthralling evening concluded, inevitably, with Jerusalem and the entry of St. George.

Major Whittingham compèred the program in his inimitable humorous and professional style.

As a result of the Fellowship Band’s visit the fund to acquire a new copy printer for the Gravesend Corps gained nearly £500.
