Derby Central Marches for New Mayor

Councillor Trevor Hathaway (representing Tutbury and Outwoods Ward) was elected as the fifteenth Mayor of East Staffordshire Borough Council for the 2006–2007 period at the Council's annual meeting in early May. The Salvation Army band from Derby Central (Bandmaster Alan Losh) participated in welcome ceremonies for the new Mayor, held on Sunday, 14 May.

The day began with a short march to a local church in Tutbury, lead by the Derby Central Band. During the services the band assisted in accompaniment for congregational singing and played a feature item, Fall Afresh. The Mayor's daughter, Ceri Hammond, who is a Salvationist, sang Alleluia. Major Ted Benneyworth, corps officer at Derby Central, brought some devotional thoughts (Major Benneyworth also serves as the Mayor's chaplain). The service ended with the rousing song “I'll Go in the Strength of the Lord”. Following the service, the band again led a march away from the church, circling the village of Tutbury and receiving the salute from the new Mayor.

Born and educated in the East Staffordshire town of Burton-on-Trent, Mayor Hathaway has been married to his wife, Jacqueline for 40 years. They have three children and two grandchildren. Jacqueline has taught in Burton schools at both the primary and secondary levels, with 40 years experience in the school system. The Mayor is a member and past president of Burton Rotary Club. He and his wife are both 3rd-generation Salvationists, worshiping in Derby.

Each Mayor selects three charities for his Mayoral year. Councillor Hathaway has chosen as his charities:

• Age Concern – who aim to improve the quality of life, and life expectancy for older people in East Staffordshire.
• Speakability – a self-help group for people who have difficulties with language skills usually as a result of stroke or head injury.
• SCALE – a special needs (sound and music) charity for groups and individuals ranging in age from 18 months to 86 years providing access to sound/music therapy.
