SLFB Visit to Worthing

The South London Fellowship Band (under the direction of Major George Whittingham) made a weekend visit to Worthing, 1 – 2 April 2006. They were joined by the guest speaker for the weekend, Major John Waters and, for the Saturday evening festival, cornet soloist Keith Hutchinson.

The Saturday evening festival commenced with the march Mighty to Save, enthusiatically received by the large audience. This was followed by a vocal version of The Lord's Prayer. Hutchinson's first contribution was the cornet solo Jubilance. Also presenting a solo item was the SLFB's principal euphonium, Bram Chestney, who played My Unchanging Friend (Ivor Bosanko). Later in the program Keith Hutchinson also played Share My Yoke. Major items from the band included the old favorite Treasures from Tchaikovsky (arr. Bramwell Coles) and Eric Ball's tone poem The Kingdom Triumphant, which brought the festival to a fitting close.

The SLFB participated in the Sunday morning worship, playing Charles Skinner's arrangement of Crown Him With Many Crowns among other items. The Singing Company from Worthing also performed. Major Waters spoke on a text from Luke 18:12–30, with the title “To Will One Thing”.

Following the service, the Worthing Band and some members of the SLFB went to the local shopping center, held an open air service and marched in witness back to the Salvation Army hall for the afternoon festival, which was styled as a Praise and Salvation meeting. The SLFB presented a mixture of classical music and features, including the Overture from The Magic Flute (Mozart, arr. Michael Kenyon) and Peter Graham's fast-paced cornet duet Quicksilver (played by Douglas Minter and Malcolm Shelton). The horn section was featured in more Mozart, this time a Rondo from one of his Horn Concertos, and the trombone section shone in Frolic for Trombones. The final band item was a classic by Eric Ball, Songs in Exile, which served as the springboard for Major Waters' afternoon message.
