Cancer Research Benefit Features Kane

On Friday, 18 November 2005, the South London Fellowship Band, under the direction of Major George Whittingham, held a concert in the Upper Norwood corps hall, for the benefit of Cancer Research UK. The concert also featured the Bromley Temple Songsters with soloist Mark Norwood, and euphonium virtuoso Derick Kane who was joined by his son, Stephen Kane for some duet items.

The Fellowship Band started the program off in a rousing fashion with the march Able. Other items by the band included Elsa's Procession to the Cathedral (Wagner, arr. William Himes) and The Canadian. The trombone section was featured in Frolic for Trombones.

Bromley Temple Songsters presented two sets of songs, the first including Gaudete and the second featuring Mark Norwood in a rendition of There Will Be God (Joy Webb). Mark also sang a classical aria, Handel's Where 'Ere You Walk.

Derick Kane, long-time principal euphonium and deputy bandmaster of the International Staff Band, is recognized as a world-class artist on the euphonium. Kane offered two solos, My Unchanging Friend and the lyrical Jesus, I Come to Thee. He was joined by his son Stephen for three duet items, including Norman Bearcroft's Timepiece.

A fitting conclusion to the festival was provided by the combined efforts of the Fellowship Band and the Bromley Songsters on a benediction, The Lord Bless You and Keep You. The evening raised over £1300 for Cancer Research UK.
