Salvation Army Band Featured on Sunday Bandstand

The Bellshill Corps Band of the Salvation Army was featured as a part of a series of brass and military music on BBC Radio Scotland over the summer. The four-part series on the Sunday Bandstand was presented by John Wallace, principal trumpet at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama. The series consisted of four one-hour programs, with recordings, interviews and features relating to some of Scotland's top bands.

Bellshill Corps Band was featured on the second program in the series, aired on 21 August 2005. Wallace explored the use of band music in a religious context, particularly focused on The Salvation Army. Some of the points highlighted during the program were the development of the rich Salvation Army repertoire, retention of the core religious functions and attributes of Salvation Army bands, and the fact that Salvation Army bands have been a training ground for many of the world's best professional brass musicians and composers.

The program featured excerpts from the band's contribution to both Sunday morning worship and an open-air meeting. The Bellshill corps officer, Captain Gary Robb, and bandmaster, Ian Dickie, were interviewed. The youth aspect of the band's ministry was represented by interviews with Assistant YP Band Leader Chris Shanks and Michelle Addie.
