Weekend at Boscombe for SLFB

The final days of July saw the South London Fellowship Band (conducted by Major George Whittingham) visit Boscombe.

The Saturday evening festival featured cornet soloist Ben Rapp, who played Charivari and Glory to His Name, and was joined by his grandfather, Eric Rapp (the Fellowship Band's principal cornet), for The Flower Duet. Band items featured on the program included Songs of the Valiant, Just As I Am, and The King of Kings. In addition to Ben Rapp's work on cornet, other soloists included Bram Chestney (euphonium), John Spicer (trombone), and vocalist Leslie Swift.

In addition to the fine playing of the band, members showed their musical versatility with fine choral singing under the direction of Bandmaster Geoff Marsh. Choral items included The Lord's Prayer, God's Love to Me Is Wonderful and Were You There?.

The Sunday worship meetings were led by Major Cecil Waters. Leslie Swift opened the Holiness Meeting with the vocal solo Holy Ground. Other contributions from the band included Michael Barrett presenting the flügelhorn solo I'd Rather Have Jesus and a personal testimony from Dave Harrison.

The Sunday afternoon festival featured the Boscombe Songsters along with the Fellowship Band. The 60th anniversary of VJ Day (the end of World War II in the Pacific theatre) was noted as the band played Under Two Flags. The scene for the Bible message of the afternoon was set with the moving selection For Our Transgressions. The Fellowship ended the weekend with Brian Bowen's outstanding exposition of the 23rd Psalm in music, My Comfort and Strength.
