American Musicians Featured at Norwich Citadel

Stephen Bulla and Major Willis Howell were the special guests for the Norwich Citadel Band's 122nd Band Anniversary Weekend on 6-7 November.

Major Howell, a Salvation Army officer, currently serves as the Divisional Secretary for the Texas Division, based in Dallas. He is well-known in Army circles as a fine vocalist, radio announcer, and bass trombone specialist as well as a spiritual leader. Stephen Bulla's name is no stranger to brass band and Salvationist musicians. In addition to his prolific work for brass bands and vocal ensembles, Bulla has held the position of Staff Arranger for the "President's Own" United States Marine Band and White House Orchestra, perhaps the most prestigious wind band in the United States, for over twenty years. Both men have been key members of the popular jazz trombone ensemble Spiritual to the 'Bone.

During the weekend, Stephen Bulla conducted the Norwich Citadel Band in some of his own compositions and performed as a pianist. Major Howell was featured in solo trombone items. One feature of the weekend was a trombone choir composed of players from around the East Anglia area, who performed some of Bulla's compositions for trombone ensemble under his direction.

Major Howell also led Sunday worship services at 10:30 am and 6:00 pm, with a musical emphasis in celebration of the band's anniversary weekend.
