Winton Weekend for Birmingham Citadel
The Birmingham Citadel Band (Bandmaster David Nicholson) traveled to Winton on 16 October 2004 for a special weekend. The events began with a festival on Saturday evening, featuring the band playing classic marches such as Rosehill, solo items such as the tenor horn solo Green Hill (featuring the melody "My Love Is Like A Red, Red Rose", associated by Salvationists with the words "There is a green hill far away"), and classical transcriptions such Les Toreadors (from Bizet's Carmen).
On Sunday morning, the Birmingham Citadel Band participated in the morning worship service, along with the Winton Singing Company. Dean Heeley gave a personal testimony and Young People's Sergeant-Major Karen Farmer gave a children's lesson, using a member of the Singing Company and two Birmingham band members as props.
Another festival was held on Sunday evening, this time with the Winton Songsters participating. A highlight of the program was prompted by some "complaints" that there was not enough congregational singing in the Saturday concer, so Bandmaster Nicholson gave the audience ample opportunity to participate by singing all seven verses of "O Boundless Salvation". The Timbrels performed a drill to the march Goldcrest. Other band items in the Sunday evening festival included Procession to Covenant and The Last Amen.
