Visit to Richmond Hill for Canadian Staff Band

The Canadian Staff Band (Bandmaster Kevin Hayward) visited the Salvation Army corps at Richmond Hill on the weekend of 3-4 April, 2004. Richmond Hill is a relatively new center, having been planted by the North York Temple Corps less than three years ago. Meetings are held in a local school, pending the acquisition of a corps building. The corps officers are Captains Mark and Isabel Wagner. The weekend consisted of a festival on Saturday night and Staff Band participation in Sunday worship services.

The Saturday night program was shared with the Richmond Hill worship team, and was purposely a "light" program, as it was the first experience of brass band for many in the audience. The worship team began the evening, with the band joining on Church on Fire and Lord, Reign in Me. Other band items in the first half of the program included In Good Company, Stephen Bulla's jazz arrangement Joshua Swings the Battle, featuring Steve Brown on cornet, Western Fantasy, and Riverdance. Euphonium soloist Steve Pavey, who attends the Richmond Hill corps, performed There Will Be God. Prior to the intermission, the band presented Exultate (Kenneth Downie).

The second half of the program opened with CelebrateI (Andrew Mackereth) and The Circle of Life. This was followed by a new composition from the Music and Gospel Arts Secretary for Canada and Bermuda, Captain Len Ballantine, entitled Heartbeat. The concert concluded with the band singing Shine On Me, devotional comments from Captain Mark Wagner, and the final offering, Soulful Hallelujah.

On Sunday morning, the band agained joined with the worship team, items included My Redeemer Lives and All Things Are Possible. The band's other contributions were In His Presence and To Worship. The featured item for the band was People Need the Lord (arr. Howard Davies), with vocals by the worship team.
