SLFB Helps Emmanuel Celebrate 75 Years

Over the past ten years, the South London Fellowship Band has developed a special bond with the Emmanuel Church in West Wickham. The church is celebrating its 75th anniversary this year and the band was invited to participate in the first of a series of events in celebration of the anniversary. The band, under the direction of Major George Whittingham, joined with guest vocalist Rhoda Atkinson (Songster Leader, Thornton Heath) for a concert held at the church on March 12, 2004.

The band began the evening with the march Mountain Camp, followed by a transcription of Mozart's overture to The Magic Flute. Other band items included Robert Redhead's suite Shout Salvation, Jubilation, and the encore march, Star Lake (Eric Ball). Band soloists and featured ensembles included the cornet trio The Trumpeters (soloists Douglas Minter, Andy Stewart, and Brian Hillyer), My Love is Like a Red, Red Rose (featuring the horn section), and Bram Chestney playing the euphonium solo My Unchanging Friend.

The evening also provided several vocal items, with Think About Jesus and The Holy City performed by Songster Leader Atkinson, accompanied on piano by Kevin Marshallsay. Additional vocal items were contributed by bandsman Les Swift, who sang Love Changes Everything, and Steal Away, presented by the Band Chorus.

An offering was taken during the evening, with over £700 being raised to be used for the work of the Emmanuel Church and Community Shield Azerbaijan, a charity that works with handicapped persons and leprosy victims in the former Soviet republic.
