Passing the Baton at the Castle
After thirty years of leadership, Bandmaster Leslie Piper of Leicester Castle has passed on the baton. John Broadhurst has been appointed bandmaster. Bandmaster Piper will remain a part of the group, taking a seat in the trombone section.
In celebration of the faithful service given to the band by Bandmaster Piper, a special weekend was held February 28-29, 2004. Musical guests included the Peterborough Songsters and cornet virtuoso David Daws.
John Broadhurst, a long-time member and local officer of the Leicester Castle Corps, is a music educator and head of the music department at a local high school. Past local officer positions held by Bandmaster Broadhurst include Songster Leader, Young People's Bandleader, and Corps Secretary (a position which he held for the last two years, until his current appointment as Bandmaster). He has extensive experience in the brass band world outside the Salvation Army, having been Musical Director of the Enderby Band for ten years, ending in 2002. During his tenure the Enderby Band was promoted into the Championship Section (1997), a rare occurrence for a band without commercial sponsorship.
