Dutch Corps Revives Autumn Tradition
The band of the Vlaardingen Corps (Bandmaster Alan J. Gibson) in the Netherlands revived its traditional Autumn Concert on November 8, 2003. After an absence of some years, the concert was again scheduled, with a special guest ensemble, Vlaardingen Wind Concert Band Sursum Corda. The concert band took the first half of the concert, opening with Onward, Christian Soldiers and concluding with Free World Fantasy. There were also several vocal solos included in this portion of the program.
Following the intermission, the Vlaardingen Salvation Army band took the stage, begining their performance with Stephen Bulla's Intrada Festivo. The band also premiered a new work by Olaf Ritman, Amazing, which uses the classic American spiritual "Amazing Grace" in a big-band setting. A vocal quartet (Leni de Groot, Coby Gibson, Ruan de Groot and Bandmaster Alan Gibson) sang Go Tell It on the Mountain. The major work for the second half of the program was Edward Gregson's Variations on "Laudate Dominum". The concert concluded with the hymn tune Abide with Me.
