Staff Band Helps Hannaford Celebrate 20
In mid-October, the Hannaford Street Silver Band celebrated its twentieth anniversary. A weekend Festival of Brass was started with a concert featuring the Canadian Staff Band of the Salvation Army, under the direction of Bandmaster Kevin Hayward. The concert was held on October 17, 2003, in the Jane Mallett Theatre, which is part of the Saint Lawrence Center for the Arts in Toronto.
The concert began with selections by the Hannaford Street Youth Band (music director Larry Shields), a 38-piece group of younger musicians. This group was formed by the Hannaford Street Silver Band five years ago. Items by the Youth Band included Edward Gregson's Prelude to an Occasion, Appalachian Mountain Folk Song Suite (James Curnow), and Little Suite for Brass (Malcolm Arnold). The Youth Band also played a work by local Salvationist Keith Ketteringham, a march entitled Castlefrank. Staff Bandmaster Hayward was invited to conduct the Youth Band in Leonard Ballantine's setting of the American folk tune "Shenandoah", Mid All the Traffic. The Youth Band also accompanied the special guest, trombonist Alistair Kay, in a jazz setting of the Londonderry Air.
Following an intermission, the Staff Band took the stage, conducted by Bandmaster Hayward. Items included The Proclaimers (Kevin Norbury), Riverdance (Whelan/Farr), and Solidarity (Robert Redhead). Trombone soloist Alistair Kay returned, first with his own arrangement of Greensleeves and then joining with the band for Malaguena (arr. Freeh). The music director of the Hannaford Street Youth Band, Larry Shields, then conducted the Staff Band in William Himes' arrangement of Amazing Grace. The concert concluded with the Staff Band's performance of Trittico (James Curnow).
