Benefit for Hospice at Hadleigh Temple

Euphonium soloist Derick Kane and vocalist Captain Carol Evans joined with the Hadleigh Temple Band and Timbrels for a concert on 24 October 2003. Following the concert, presented at Hadleigh Temple, a cheque for £900 was handed over for the work of Little Havens Children's Hospice.

Due to delays en route to Hadleigh, Derick Kane, solo euphonium with The International Staff Band, took the stage without his customary warm-up, just blowing a couple of notes before entering on a top "C" to commence Ivor Bosanko's "My Unchanging Friend". He also played "Shepherd Song" (Trevor Davis) and, accompanied by songster pianist Carl Carter, "Carnival of Venice", Mozart's "Exultate" and Monti's "Czardas".

The band's solo items were Leslie Condon's "Celebration", "Trepak" from the Nutcracker Suite, "Len Ballantine's "Mid all the traffic", Norman Bearcroft's "They'll sing a welcome home" and Eric Ball's "Star Lake", as well as accompanying the timbels in Bosanko's "Marching Onward", Dudley Bright's "Assignment" and "Emblem of the Army".

Captain Carol Evans sang four songs from a CD she has recently recorded to help raise funds for a new hall at her Corps, Saffron Walden, and Roger Buxton, of BBC Essex, was the host for the evening, which had been arranged by Bandsman Peter Edwards.
