SA Symphonic Wind Ensemble Concert at Boscombe

On the evening of 25 October 2003, nearly £1200 was raised towards research into Cystic Fibrosis following a concert given by The Salvation Army Symphonic Wind Ensemble at Boscombe, who were supported by the fine singing of Darren Bartlett. The ensemble's items included three premieres: Michael Babb's "The Love and Power of Christ" included a vivid depiction of the crucifixion, followed by the triumph of the resurrection, whilst Maurice Bale's "Over Jordan", a medley of spirituals, orginated in an arrangement made for school orchestra in the 1970's. "Miles Ahead", by Philip Venables, of Balga Citadel, was written for a similar ensemble put together for a special event in Australia, and presented the familiar hymn tune effectively in a jazz funk style.

The programme took its title and theme from Alan Laken's setting of The Old Hundredth, entitled "From Age to Age", and the gathering were reminded that the love of Jesus remains the same throughout the ages, even though great changes have taken place in society. The programme was led through as usual by Bandmaster Andrew Mackereth (Nuneaton), whose music featured included the up-tempo "Time To Shine", the saxophone solo "I surrender all" and the march "On a mission", a pastiche offering influenced by the film music of John Williams.
