Salvation Army Band to Lead Portland Parade
A Salvation Army band made up of players from Portland, Oregon and various Canadian cities has been chosed as the lead musical unit for the Southwest Airlines Grand Floral Parade, the central event in Portland's annual Rose Festival. The 120-member Army contingent will include brass musicians, timbrelists, and Salvationist leaders. The parade steps off at 10 am on Saturday, June 7, 2003.
The Portland Rose Festival has been celebrated for almost one hundred years. It has grown to a month-long event, with an aggregate total of two million visitors. The first festival was held in 1905, and the festival was organized as a non-profit charitable association in 1907.
In addition to the parade, Salvationist musicians will also participate in the Festival of Bands, along with six high school marching bands from Oregon, Colorado and California.
As with any Salvation Army band, the group assembled for the Rose Festival has a religious message. To further this part of their mission, they will join with musicians from the Sunnyside Seventh-day Adventist Church for a "Musical Celebration of Praise and Worship", which will be held at 7 pm on Saturday, June 7, 2003, at the church.
