USA East Names Music Editor

The USA Eastern Territory has filled its Music Editor position. Dorothy Gates, currently the Assistant Divisional Music Director in Washington, DC, will begin work at USA Eastern Territorial Headquarters in August. The position of Music Editor for the territory has been vacant since Kevin Norbury transferred to the Canada and Bermuda Territory.

Ms. Gates was born in Northern Ireland and earned a music degree from the Queen's College in Belfast in 1988. She was awarded a scholarship to continue her studies at the University of Michigan. While at Michigan she earned a master's degree in trombone performance (and also met her husband, Mark Gates). Upon completing her education, she served in the music department of the USA Central Territory's Western Division, based in Omaha, Nebraska. She and her husband then moved to the Washington, DC area, where both are employed at the National Capital and Virginia Divisional Headquarters.

While in Washington, Ms. Gates has served in several capacities at Divisional Headquarters, most recently as Assistant Divisional Music Director, with responsibility for the youth music programs in the division, including the summer music conservatory and the Divisional Youth Band. She has also served as the principal trombone and band secretary of the National Capital Band, and was bandmaster of the Prince George's Corps Band from 1997 - 1999. She has toured and recorded with the popular trombone ensemble Spiritual to the 'Bone.

As a composer, Ms. Gates is becoming well-known in Salvation Army circles for both brass and vocal works. Her pieces have appeared in several publications, including the USA Southern Territory's vocal series Sing Praise! and the American Band Journal. Her latest work, a festival march entitled Georgetown, will be premiered by the National Capital Band at the Festival of Faith to be held in Atlanta in June, 2002.
