Far North Trip for New York Staff Band

On the weekend of March 15 through March 17, 2002, the New York Staff Band traveled to the Northern New England Division for a Music and Gospel Arts Weekend.

The weekend began on Friday, March 15, with a motor coach ride from the greater New York area to South Portland, Maine, where the band was greeted by Divisional Music Director Andrew Poulopoulos and Northern New England divisional leaders Captains Richard and Janet Munn. Events on Friday evening included a dinner with delegates from the division followed by vocal and instrumental rehearsals.

Saturday was spent with the NYSB members and Northern New England Salvationists joined in various activities, including massed band and chorus items. Items played by the massed band included Pines of the Appian Way from Resphigi's "The Pines of Rome", New Frontier (William Himes), and Northern Brass, a new march from the pen of Stephen Bulla. On Saturday evening, a concert by the Staff Band was held before a capacity crowd at a local Baptist church.

On Sunday, March 17 the band traveled to the Rye Church in New Hampshire, where they performed at two worship services. Music provided by the Staff Band included William Himes' arrangement of Amazing Grace, the cornet solo Swedish Hymn played by principal cornetist Gordon Ward, and It Is Well performed by the Staff Band Chorus. The music director of the Rye Church, Bill Francis (the son of Colonels William and Marilyn Francis) was featured at the piano in Such Love (Richard Phillips). Following a meal provided by the congregation of the Rye Church, the band returned to New York.
