Fourth Annual Montclair Brass Band Festival
The fourth annual Montclair Brass Band Festival will be held in Montclair, New Jersey, on May 4, 2002. The festival is sponsored by the Imperial Brass of New Jersey and Dillon Music. Activities will begin at 9:15 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Montclair. The Master of Ceremonies for the festival is Dr. Ronald W. Holz, Professor of Instrumental Music and Music Literature at Asbury College and an internationally recognized authority on brass instruments and bands. The featured ensemble is the Household Troops Band of the Salvation Army, based in London, England.
The trombone is a featured instrument at this year's festival, including the Festival Trombone Choir (forty trombones!), jazz trombone specialist Jim Pugh, and Nick Hudson, who will be performing the premiere of a new work by composer Gabriel Major-Magothy. Bands participating include:
- Classic Brass (Tom Labadorf)
- Imperial Brass (Patrick Burns)
- Montclair Citadel Band (Charles Baker)
- Hempstead Citadel Band (Gordon Ward)
- New Jersey Youth Band (Philip Ferreira)
- Purchase College Brass Band (Graham Ashton)
- Maple Leaf Brass Band (David Druce)
The festival will also feature a panel discussion/demonstration session, moderated by Dr. Holz, entitled "Trumpet vs. Cornet". The panel will feature three distinguished performers: Chris Jaudes, Broadway lead trumpeter; Terry Everson, Assistant Professor of Trumpet at Boston University; and Graham Ashton, chairman of the brass department at Purchase College and former member of the Philip Jones Brass Ensemble.
The festival will conclude with a Gala Festival (tickets available at the door), featuring the Festival Trombone Choir with Jim Pugh, Nick Hudson, and the Household Troops Band. The concert will begin at 7:30 p.m.
