Orchard Retires from Melbourne Staff Band
Soprano cornetist Max Orchard has retired from the Melbourne Staff Band. Orchard joined the group in 1977, when he and his family moved from Syndney to Melbourne. Since then, he has been a mainstay of the cornet section, serving some time as principal cornet and the majority of his Staff Band career on soprano cornet (over twenty years).
Max Orchard has supported the Melbourne Staff Band on several international tours, including Europe and the United Kingdom in 1978 (culminating in performances at the International Congress in London) and again in the United Kingdom in 1986. During the 1986 tour, he was serving as principal cornet.
The current Melbourne Staff Band members honored Max at a recent private gathering. Current Staff Bandmaster Ken Waterworth thanked both Max and his wife Yvonne, for the years of service and support to the Staff Band. Colin Woods, retired Staff Bandmaster, also sent a message of appreciation. Both Max and Yvonne Orchard received presentations acknowledging twenty-five years of association with the Staff Band - Max as a player, and Yvonne as a supportive spouse.
