NYSB Weekend in NEOSA

The band departed New York by bus at 6:00 am on October 20, arriving in Wooster, Ohio at 4:00 pm, at the new Salvation Army Family Life Center, where they partook of a dinner with members of the Advisory Board and the Women's Auxiliary. The evening concert was held at the College of Wooster (where the band played for the second time in the past five years). The band opened with The Star-Spangled Banner, followed by The Warriors (Brian Bowen). Gordon Ward played the cornet solo Crossroad (Stephen Bulla). The concert continued with Edward Gregson's major work Variations on "Laudate Dominum", followed by the intensely spiritual The Call (Erik Leidzén). Euphonium soloist Aaron VanderWeele presented Hora Staccato, written by Philip Rayment, a former member of the band. The concert ended with an arrangement of There is a Redeemer, written by Ralph Pearce in commemoration of the September 11 tragedies. As an encore, the band and audience combined in God Bless America.

On Sunday morning, the band moved to Canton, Ohio, where they participated in the morning worship at the Trinity United Church of Christ. The band's contributions included Lamb of God (arr. Terry Camsey), The Majesty and Glory of Your Name (arr. Chris Mallett), and an arrangement of It Is Well. Following lunch at the church, the ensemble moved on to Wadsworth, Ohio, for a concert. Gordon Ward performed the cornet solo Whirlwind (Peter Graham), then joined Aaron Vanderweele in a cornet/euphonium duet, Joyous Service (Kevin Norbury). The cornet section was featured in Robert Redhead's Cornet Cascade. Raymond Livingston contributed a vocal selection, Let Freedom Ring (arr. Borup and Peck). The concert ended with Battle Cry of Freedom (Stanley Ditmer) and the audience participaing in singing God Bless America.
