Flint Citadel Announces 69th Annual Thanksgiving Concert

The Flint Citadel Band, based in Flint, Michigan, USA, has announced that the Canadian Staff Band will be featured at its 69th Annual Thanksgiving Concert. The concert will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 24, in the James H. Whiting Auditorium in downtown Flint. The Staff Band will also participate in the Morning Worship service at the Flint Citadel Corps on Sunday, November 25, and will present a second concert at the Corps on Sunday afternoon.

Traditionally, the Thanksgiving Concert is presented on the Saturday following Thanksgiving. The concert is a major production, with the members of the Flint Citadel Band raising $15,000 to $17,000 to cover the costs. No regular Salvation Army funds are used for concert expenses. Since 1973, the concert has been held at the Flint civic auditorium, which seats over 2,000 persons.

The Canadian Staff Band is based in Toronto, Ontario, at the Salvation Army territorial headquarters for Canada and Bermuda. The band is one of the premier ensembles of the Salvation Army, and is led by Bandmaster Brian Burditt. The Staff Band, in addition to duties within the territory, travels extensively, most recently conducting a tour of Australia.

The venue for this event, the James H. Whiting Auditorium, is the Flint civic auditorium. It opened in 1967, and recently underwent an extensive renovation, costing 6.8 million dollars. The Whiting Auditorium is located on the campus of the Flint Cultural Center. Major groups and events housed at the auditorium include the Flint Symphony Orchestra, the Once Upon a Time series of the Flint Youth Theatre, and the Cultural Center's Showcase Series. The auditorium is named for James Hubert Whiting (1842 - 1919), an early pioneer of the automotive industry in Michigan.
