Saturday, October 20, 2001During the band's time in Atlanta, we are staying at the Radisson hotel across the street from Atlanta Temple Corps. Because of some changes in the roster for the trip, the hotel has been a bit confused.
GEORGIA DIVISIONAL MUSIC COUNCILS On Saturday, the National Capital Band supported the third annual Georgia Divisional Music Councils. The opening session featured the divisional youth band, chorus, and timbrels, and several corps groups. The Georgia Divisional Youth Band (Bandmaster John Zanders) provided preliminary music , followed by words of welcome from Assistant Divisional Music Director Daniel Meeks. The Youth Band then began the program with the upbeat arrangement Do Lord, Oh (Stephen Bulla). Handel's Water Music was the accompaniment for a drill by the Divisional Youth Timbrels, under the direction of Timbrel Leader Susan Zanders. Bandmaster John Zanders returned to conduct the Divisional Youth Chorus in Wake Up, O Sleeper (Graham Kendrick, arr. Len Ballantine). The second portion featured the Athens Corps Senior Band (Captain Barry Corbitt), playing Penlan (from the Salvation Army Band Tune Book and Rejoice (Leslie Condon). The Divisional Commander for the Georgia Division, Major Dalton Cunningham, then brought a devotional thought. The Atlanta Temple Corps Band (Bandmaster John Zanders concluded the session with I Love You, Lord (Laurie Klein, arr. Howard Davies) and Laudes Domini (William Gordon).
Following the opening session, the councils broke up into individual workshops. Several of the National Capital Band members participated by leading sessions. Following lunch, there was a massed band rehearsal preceding the afternoon Music Festival. The festival began with a praise and worship time with the contemporary group Quarter to Three, led by Marty Mikles. A presentation by the Marietta Corps timbrel brigade followed. The Georgia Divisional Band, under the direction of Territorial Music Secretary Dr. Richard E. Holz, played Picton Citadel (Robert Redhead) and St. Magnus (Ray Steadman-Allen). Deputy Bandmaster Ken Chapman led the Georgia Divisional Chorus in Give Thanks (Smith/Wilson) and There is Power in the Blood (Jones/Mauldin).
The soothing tones of the chorus overwhelmed one of our young tuba players, who rested his head gently on his tuba and drifted off.
While our young tubist slept, the Gainesville Corps Senior Band played And Can It Be (James Curnow) and Are Ye Able (William Himes), under the direction of Brigadier Carl Hanson. Bandmaster Daniel Meeks, Associate Music Director for the Georgia Division, then presented the Senior Music Leader of the Year award to Brigadier Hanson. Fortunately, the applause for Brigadier Hanson was enough to awaken the sleeper.
The festival continued with a mini-concert by the National Capital Band, including Rosehill (Albert H. Jakeway), Overture to "The Magic Flute" (Mozart, arr. Michael Kenyon), The Conqueror (Ray Steadman-Allen), featuring euphonium soloist Major Tony Barrington, and Tucker (Erik Leidzén), featuring cornet soloist Ove Ericson. Following a devotional tought given by Captain Richard McConniel, Divisional Youth Secretary of the National Capital and Virginaia Division, the festival concluded with the massed bands playing The Firing Line (Bruce Broughton) under the direction of Bandmaster Lars-Otto Ljungholm. |
